Overview

The Individual Genome Sequencing (IGS) service can provide you and your doctor with valuable information regarding your genetic makeup. It is important to speak with your doctor or a medical geneticist if you are interested in genome sequencing. He or she can help you determine whether or not IGS might be right for you.

Prior to ordering IGS, your doctor (or geneticist/genetic counselor) will meet with you to discuss what you may, or may not, learn from genome sequencing, as well as review important considerations. Once your genome sequence has been completed, your doctor will discuss your sequence with you and help formulate an action plan, which may include ordering a second, clinically validated test to investigate an IGS result relevant to your health concern.

Before ordering an individual genome sequencing service, we recommend that you:

  • Discuss your interest with a doctor or geneticist who can lead you through the process
  • Know what genetic information you are seeking
  • Learn whether IGS will provide the information you need
  • Consider what additional information you may, or may not, want to learn based on your genome sequence
